Everybody knows that Grameen Bank is an internationally acclaimed micro-credit institution in Bangladesh. It is the Bank of the Poor. It gives loans to the landless and helpless people, especially the women. Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus is the founder and Managing Director of this Bank.
He founded Grameen Bank at jobra village of Hathazari in Chittagong district in 1976. Grameen Bank provides micro-credit means collateral-free small loans offered only to the poor. Dr. Muhammad Yunus introduced the theory of micro-credit through Grameen Bank to alleviate poverty and economic disparity.
He has been proven successful in his mission. Starting from a singular village, Grameen Bank now has spread over 55000 villages all over Bangladesh, Its total members are about 7 million. It was found that more than 50% of program participants of Grameen Bank have moved out of poverty.
